About Love. Like a Monster
21 September - 09 October 2019
Gallery G-77 is pleased to present About Love. Like a Monster, a solo exhibition by Noko Watanabe.
One of Watanabe’s central concepts is “to depict the fleeting moment when incompatible elements encounter one another as a beautiful state within painting.” She believes that “conflicts between differing elements occur constantly in life. Rather than viewing them as friction or disharmony, I want to capture them as the most interactive and active moments—moments in which each element can shine.”
Intense brushstrokes layered with serene, delicate lines intertwine across multiple strata, creating compositions that move between abstraction and figuration. The lustrous quality of oil paint, complex color mixtures, and hues that shift with changing light invite the viewer to engage their own sensuous perception when looking at the work.
“My paintings are not meant to be easily understood,” Watanabe says. “Painting is not something to be explained, but something to be experienced and felt. I want my work to become a place that generates new possibilities, allowing viewers to discover their own creativity.”
We warmly invite not only art enthusiasts but also those who may not often have the opportunity to encounter art to visit the exhibition and enjoy the experience.

Naoko Watanabe

Contemporary artist working in an abstract manner. Watanabe deeply explores the role of color in conveying the essence of the world and its perception.
One of Watanabe's concepts is "representing the moment when incompatible things meet as a beautiful state of painting." “The conflict of different things happens continually in life. Rather than seeing it as a trap or inconsistency, I want to make it the most interactive and active moment for each other to shine,” Watanabe thinks. The striking strokes and quiet lines are folded in layers, the composition of abstraction and concrete, and the glossiness of the oil, the complex color mixture and the color that changes the way of viewing by light rays, We want to work and see. “My painting is a painting that I don't understand. I don't understand it, but experience and feel it. I want to create a new option for the viewers to discover their own creative ideas.”
