Music Is. Music Exists. Nacht und Träume series

ink on paper, 700 x 97 cm

Gallery G-77 presents new scroll by Keisuke Watanabe at VOLTA Basel 2026.

Watanabe's practice is rooted in extemporaneous drawing made directly from a live model. Rather than depicting the nude as an aesthetic or erotic subject, he uses drawing to explore movement, presence and the passage of time. Working at close range, he embraces distortions and irregularities as traces of direct encounter, transforming observation into a form of attentiveness and empathy.

Drawing, for Watanabe, shares important affinities with music. Improvisation and structure, tension and release, change and continuity become principles through which images unfold. These concerns find an expanded expression in his seven-metre scroll Music Is. Music Exists. Nacht und Träume, inspired by Franz Schubert's celebrated song of 1825.
